Sinopse

Este livro nasce de dois propósitos, por um lado, da vontade de disponibilizar em livro um conjunto de ensaios que já foram publicados em parte ou na sua totalidade nas redes sociais e nos blogues do autor e, por outro lado, seguindo um critério selectivo elaborar um trajecto de ideias ao longo de cerca de vinte anos. Desta forma, foram escolhidos cinco ensaios, escritos durante este espectro temporal e marcados por alguns dos temas que se tornaram afinidades electivas, lugares onde as constelações de pensamento se tornaram íntimas.

A ordem pela qual os ensaios surgem no livro não é cronológica, surge sim de uma tentativa de encadeamento de sentido, tentando-se assim criar uma urdidura do pensar. Os três primeiros ensaios – “A Remissão do Humano” (2016), “Da Vaidade: Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas (2013)” e “Do Amor-Próprio à Vida Eterna: João 12:25” (2019) – foram todos escritos e divulgados nas redes sociais do autor no ano em que foram escritos. No entanto, apesar dos três anos de diferença entre cada um, existe um fio condutor entre os temas do narcisismo, da vaidade e do amor-próprio. O quarto ensaio – “Do Enigma à Revelação: Leituras de Heraclito e Nietzsche” (2002) – é o mais antigo e aquele que teve uma maior edição. O ensaio inclui a edição e a tradução do grego de quarenta e dois fragmentos. O quinto e último ensaio – “Para uma Leitura dos Textos Astrológicos Gregos e Latinos” (2022) – é o mais recente. Este ensaio vai tentar estabelecer uma historiografia resumida da edição crítica e da tradução destes textos, bem como indicar um imperativo de dinamização dessa leitura, apontando-se falhas, lacunas e necessidades.

O título do livro vem inserir o vector ausente: a poesia. “Há Génios no Jardim da Fantasia” é o primeiro verso do poema “No Mundo da Magia”, escrito pela avó do autor, Margarida Figueiredo, e a ele dedicado. Este poema descreve na perfeição o autor deste livro, é como se antes de o ser já o fosse. Os cincos ensaios que compõem este livro formam assim uma unidade que se torna, em certo sentido, biográfica, pois tece uma teia de pensar ao longo de vinte anos.

O Sol Negro, a Luz da Escuridão, Jung e a Psicologia Profunda: Exemplo Textual

  Jung’s exploration was influenced by the seventeenth-century alchemist Mylius, who refers to the ancient philosophers as the source of our knowledge about Sol niger. In several places in his collected works, Jung writes of Sol niger as a powerful and important image of the unconscious. To consider the image in the context of the unconscious is both to recognize its vastness and unknown quality as well as to place it in the historical context of depth psychology and of the psyche’s attempt to represent the unrepresentable. Imagining Sol niger in this way is to see it in its most general sense, but Jung has also extracted from the alchemical literature a rich and complex, if scattered, phenomenology of the image. The black sun, blackness, putrefactio, mortificatio, the nigredo, poisoning, torture, killing, decomposition, rotting, and death all form a web of interrelationships that describe a terrifying, if most often provisional, eclipse of consciousness or of our conscious standpoint. 

  The nigredo, the initial black stage of the alchemical opus, has been considered the most negative and difficult operation in alchemy. It is also one of the most numinous, but few authors other than Jung have explored the theme in its many facets. In addition to the aspects just described, Jung also finds in this image of blackness a nonmanifest latency, a shadow of the sun, as well as an Other Sun, linked to both Saturn and Yahweh, the primus anthropos. For the most part, Sol niger is equated with and understood only in its nigredo aspect, while its more sublime dimension—its shine, its dark illumination, its Eros and wisdom— remains in the unconscious. 

  I imagine my work on the black sun as an experiment in alchemical psychology. It is concerned with this difficult and enigmatic image and with our understanding of darkness. My contention is that darkness historically has not been treated hospitably and that it has remained in the unconscious and become a metaphor for it. It has been seen primarily in its negative aspect and as a secondary phenomenon, itself constituting a shadow—something to integrate, to move through and beyond. In so doing, its intrinsic importance is often passed over. This attitude has also been perpetuated in alchemy, which places darkness at the beginning of the work and sees it primarily in terms of the nigredo. Yet in its usage of the black sun there is a hint of a darkness that shines. It is this shine of the paradoxical image that captures my attention. How is it possible to imagine a darkness filled with light or a shine that contains the qualities of both light and darkness? 

  Jung has noted that darkness “has its own peculiar intellect and its own logic which should be taken very seriously,” and it is my intent to give darkness its due—not to rush beyond it but to enter its realm to learn more about its mysteries. To turn toward darkness in this way is an odd reversal of our ordinary propensity. To more fully understand the turn toward darkness it is first important to pause and consider how much the historical primacy of light has infused our understanding of consciousness itself. 

  The image of light and its corresponding metaphor of the sun are fundamentally intertwined with the history of consciousness. Our language demonstrates the pervasiveness of these images, and it is difficult to envision a way of thinking that does not rely on them. In myth, science, philosophy, religion, and alchemy we find these metaphors widely disseminated. Our language is filled with metaphors of illumination: to bring to light, to make clear, to enlighten, and so on, all serve in these and in many other contexts.

[81] Its value is obvious enough to the psychologist, since astrology represents the sum of all the psychological knowledge of antiquity.


Carl Gust Jung, Letters I, “To L. Oswald, 8 December 1928”:

You are quite right in supposing that I reckon astrology among those movements which, like theosophy, etc., seek to assuage an irrational thirst for knowledge but actually lead it into a sidetrack. Astrology is knocking at the gates of our universities: a Tübingen professor has switched over to astrology and a course on astrology was given at Cardiff University last year. Astrology is not mere superstition but contains some psychological facts (like theosophy) which are of considerable importance. Astrology has actually nothing to do with the stars but is the 5000-year-old psychology of antiquity and the Middle Ages. Unfortunately I cannot explain or prove this to you in a letter.


Carl Gustav Jung, Letters I, “To Sigmund Freud, 12 June 1911”:

My evenings are taken up very largely with astrology. I make horoscopic calculations in order to find a clue to the core of psychological truth. Some remarkable things have turned up which will certainly appear incredible to you. In the case of one lady, the calculation of the positions of the stars at her nativity produced a quite definite character picture, with several biographical details which did not belong to her but to her mother – and the characteristics fi tted the mother to a T. The lady suffers from an extraordinary mother complex. I dare say that we shall one day discover in astrology a good deal of knowledge that has been intuitively projected into the heavens. For instance, it appears that the signs of the zodiac are character pictures, in other words libido symbols which depict the typical qualities of the libido at a given moment.
